Niko Partners highlights GCC-Japan gaming opportunity

Japanese video game franchises that introduced Arabic localization and increased their local market presence saw their share of sales from the GCC rise by an average of 33.2%, according to new research from Niko Partners.
The research brief, commissioned by Media City Qatar in collaboration with games market intelligence firm Niko Partners, examines the growing relationship between Japan’s games industry and players across the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Niko analyzed 10 Japanese game franchises that introduced Arabic localization alongside increased local market support. All 10 recorded an increase in the proportion of their sales coming from GCC markets compared with previous entries in the same franchises that did not receive the same localization and regional support.
Across the titles studied, the average uplift in GCC sales share was 33.2%.
The finding provides evidence of the commercial impact that localization and greater regional engagement can have for international publishers targeting Gulf markets. The report points to Arabic language support, cultural adaptation, regional partnerships and local marketing as increasingly important parts of publishers’ strategies.
Japanese games already enjoy significant recognition among players in the region.
A survey conducted for the research in Qatar found that 95% of respondents could identify at least one Japanese video game franchise, while almost half recognized more than five.
The research also points to the continued growth of the GCC games market. Niko Partners forecasts that the six GCC countries will account for more than 40 million gamers and $3.5 billion in annual player spending by 2030.
The report argues that the relationship between Japanese gaming companies and the GCC is evolving beyond simply making games available in the region. Publishers and other industry players are increasingly exploring localization, publishing partnerships, investment and more dedicated approaches to serving Gulf audiences.
The GCC has meanwhile become an increasingly important market for the global games industry, driven by a young gaming population and significant investment in the sector, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
